1. Introduction

Welcome to TypingMaster Pro. This powerful typing tutor will help you improve your typing substantially whether you are a novice or a seasoned professional. TypingMaster has many courses that will satisfy your changing needs as your skills and speed improve.

The complete touch-typing course will teach you the touch-typing technique starting with the basics and advancing step-by-step using examples, word drills and games to get you familiar with your keyboard.

TypingMaster Pro also offers a revision course for people who have had experience with touch-typing, but want to freshen up on their typing skills. Courses to practice the special keys of the keyboard and the numeric keypad along with a course aimed for professional typists are also included.

With the Interactive Review Wizard in TypingMaster Pro and the TypingMaster ProTrainer tool, you will be able to fine-tune your typing skills. These tools monitor your typing and create customized training to suit your individual needs. Because of this, they will help improve your typing long after you have finished with the courses.

This manual will help you get TypingMaster installed and running on your system. All of the features in TypingMaster Pro and ProTrainer are also explained. Please read this manual carefully before installing TypingMaster Pro to your system. This will ensure a trouble free installation and an easy startup. You will also know how to take advantage of all the features TypingMaster Pro has to offer.

2. Installation

TypingMaster Pro is available both on CD and in electronic form.

If you purchase the program with electronic delivery, you will not receive a CD with your purchase. Instead, after your purchase a key will be sent that will unlock the demonstration version of TypingMaster making it a fully functional product with all the lessons enabled.

Therefore, in order to install TypingMaster Pro you will need a connection to the Internet to download the demonstration version of TypingMaster Pro (or at least know someone who has a connection) and an email address where the license information will be sent.

This section will explain the necessary steps to download TypingMaster Pro and get it installed on your computer.

If you have purchased the program on a CD, you can skip the Downloading portion of the instructions. The rest of the installation instructions apply to both forms of delivery.

2.1 Downloading

Please download the latest version of TypingMaster Pro from this address: http://www.TypingMaster.com/gettmPro.asp. Click on this address to start downloading.

If this download link does not work, you can go to the TypingMaster Pro download page, which is located at: http://www.TypingMaster.com/index.asp?go=tutordemo. In this page you will find the download link for TypingMaster Pro.

If you get a pop-up window asking you whether you wish to save the program to disk or run it from the current location, select saving and click on "OK". This will allow you to select a location on your hard disk where the setup package will be saved.

Please save the setup package to your Desktop, this way you will be able to start the installation program directly from your Desktop.

When you select "Save" the download will begin. The size of the installation package is around 3.6 MB. If you are using a modem, please reserve adequate time for the download process. The estimated download time with a 56K modem is around 10 minutes.

NOTE:

If you are experiencing trouble with downloading or download speeds are considerably lower than your connection to the Internet, please cancel the download and click on the download link again.

Clicking on the download link will direct your browser to retrieve the installation from one of three servers. This is used to even out the server load. At times a server may be busy and downloading from another server will be quicker.

Also try downloading off peak hours, this will ensure that the servers are not under a heavy load during your download.

2.2 The Setup Program

The setup program will first ask you a few questions on the components you wish to install and where you wish to install TypingMaster Pro. After this, the program will copy all necessary files to your installation folder and create shortcuts to the Start -menu. In this section we will go through the different choices you will have that affect the installation of TypingMaster Pro.

If you are installing the program into a network, please refer to the Network Installation Manual for detailed installation information.

Please exit all programs before starting the setup program. Other programs running in the background may have an adverse effect on the installation. Please print this section of the manual if you wish to see the instructions when installing. If you do not want to print this section, read through the instructions before installing. This will give you an idea of the choices you will make during installation. The instructions are organized into a list where a section represents a screen from the setup program.

  1. The setup program will start by asking you to close all running programs. If you do not have any other programs running select "Next" to continue. Otherwise, select "Cancel" and close all other programs and restart the setup program.

  2. You will be presented with the License Agreement. Please read through this agreement carefully before accepting its terms. (It's always a good idea to know what you are getting into :-) By selecting "Yes" you indicate that you have read the agreement and accepted its terms and the installation will continue. If you select "No" the setup program will abort.

  3. Now you can specify the folder where TypingMaster will be installed. The default folder is C:\Program Files\TypingMaster\ If you are satisfied with this folder select "Next". If you are unsure of where to install TypingMaster select "Next" since the default folder works best with most computer setups.

  4. Now you will be asked which type of setup you wish to install on your computer. The choices you make here affect what components will be installed to your computer. The following table will describe each of the setup options and the components that will be installed with each option. Please select the option that is the most appropriate for you and click on "Next".

    Standard

The Standard Installation includes all the files needed to use both the TypingMaster Pro typing tutor and the ProTrainer utility.

This is the recommended setup for single computer installations.

    Network

The Network Installation, in addition to all the components of the Standard Installation, also includes the TypingMaster Manager tool for centralized user and workstation management.

The Network Installation and User Manual is also included in this installation. This manual describes the installation of TypingMaster Pro to a network and the also covers the use of TypingMaster Manager.

The Network Installation is recommended for all schools and companies who are installing TypingMaster Pro to their networks.

When Network Installation is selected you will be able to select the components to be installed (e.g. If ProTrainer hasn't been purchased you can leave this out to save disk space).

The Network Installation and User Manual is also available on-line at the following address: www.TypingMaster.com/index.asp?go=manual

    Tutor only

The Tutor only Installation will install only the TypingMaster Pro typing tutor without the ProTrainer utility.

Select this option if you do not wish to have the ProTrainer utility.

  5. After selecting the type of setup, you can choose the location where TypingMaster Pro program icons will be placed in the Start -menu. The default folder is TypingMaster. If you are satisfied with this, select "Next" and the setup program will create a TypingMaster folder under Programs in the Start -menu.

If you wish to have the program icons in another folder, you can select an existing folder from the list or type in a name of your own in the "Program Folders" field. When you have made your selection, select "Next".

  6. Now, you will be presented with the choices you have made. If you are satisfied with these choices select "Next".

If you wish to change some of your choices, you can return to your previous selections by selecting "Back" until you reach the desired screen.

  7. The setup program will now copy the program files to the installation folder you have selected and shortcuts to the Start -menu will be created.

  8. Finally you will be able to select if you wish to start the program immediately after installation and/or read the README file.

It is strongly recommended that you have a look at the README file. Changes and improvements are constantly being made to TypingMaster Pro. The README file will contain the latest information on your version of TypingMaster Pro.

When you have made your selections, click on "Finish" to end the setup program.

NOTE:

If you experience any difficulties with the installation, please visit www.TypingMaster.com/index.asp?go=support and select the product you need help with. The support pages contain the latest information and FAQs that will guide you with installation.

3. Starting TypingMaster

3.1 Launching

When you installed TypingMaster Pro to your computer, the installation program added TypingMaster Pro to your Start menu.

To start the program just click on the Start -button and go to Programs. Here you will find a TypingMaster folder which contains the program and manuals. Please click on "TypingMaster Pro" to start the program.

3.2 Logging in

Each time you start TypingMaster Pro the login screen is initially displayed.

Since many people can be using TypingMaster on one computer or computer network, TypingMaster Pro uses user names to distinguish between users. All your user information will be stored under this user name. When you start TypingMaster Pro with your user name, you can continue practicing from where you left off before.

The login screen consists of a "User name" field where you will enter your user name. You can also select your user name from the pull-down menu by clicking on the arrow at the end of this field. (This option can be disabled by a network administrator for security reasons).

If you are using TypingMaster Pro on a network and the administrator has opted to use password protection, a "Password" field is also shown.

After entering or selecting your user name you can start the program by selecting "Enter".

If you are starting TypingMaster Pro for the first time, please select the option "I am a new user..." This will bring up a screen where you can enter your user name and enter the program.

If you enter a new name to the "User name" field and select "Enter", the program will ask whether you are a new user. If you answer "Yes" the program will start with the user name you typed in.

NOTE:

TypingMaster Pro supports special characters in user names. This means that you can use special characters (such as dash and period) in your user name and the program will recognize them correctly.

However, in general it's a good idea to give your user name in "Firstname Lastname" format (or if you are working with a large user base "Lastname Firstname" format).

3.3 Exiting

You can exit TypingMaster Pro at any time by clicking on the "Exit" button located in top right corner of the program screen. Also the standard X button in the window frame can be used to exit the program.

When you exit TypingMaster Pro your current settings and studying information is saved, so that when you start the program again, you can continue from where you previously left off. Please note that only completed exercises are saved. If you are in the middle of an exercise when exiting, the specific exercise information is not saved.

4. Using TypingMaster

This section of the manual will go through your first use of the program, explain the user interface and guide you in studying touch-typing with the program.

You will see the welcome screen after logging in for the first time. If you have used TypingMaster Pro before, the program will remember where you left off and continue from that screen.

The different sections of the screen are highlighted in red:

1. This is the program menu for TypingMaster Pro. It will allow you to quickly navigate between the main sections of the program. The Menu also includes links to change the settings of the program and view program version and license information. The program menu is discussed in detail in the Program Menu section.

2. This is the main portion of the screen where all study and practicing will be done. When you start TypingMaster for the first time, the welcome screen shown above will be displayed.

3. This section will display the navigation buttons. Click on "Next" to advance to the next selection or lesson. The "Cancel" button will take you to your previous selection or lesson.

The welcome screen gives a quick introduction to the program and also shows your most important program settings, if these are correct, you can begin studying immediately by selecting "Next".

If the settings seem incorrect or you wish to have a look at all the settings, please go to "Settings" in the "Menu" to change these to your liking. The settings will be discussed in detail in the Settings section of the manual.

NOTE:

If you have purchased the program, it might be a good idea to insert the license information at this stage.

In the demo version, studying is limited to only the first few lessons in each course. When you insert the license information, the program will become fully featured with all the lessons enabled.

To see how licenses are inserted, please click here.

4.2 Studying

In this section, we will explain the different courses that TypingMaster Pro has to offer. Selecting and navigating in the courses and lessons will be explained and the different exercise types are described.

4.2.1 Courses

After the welcome screen, it's time to begin studying.

By clicking on "Next" in the welcome screen, you will get to the Courses screen where you can select the course you wish to study. If you have already started studying a course and wish to change it, the Courses screen can be reached by selecting the "Change course" option in the lesson screen.

By selecting a course from the list, you will see a short description of the course, the number of lessons in the course and the percentage already studied.

Under this course information, the maximum lesson duration can be selected from the pull-down list. If the option "No time limits" is selected, no time restrictions are set on the lessons.

Here is a list of all the courses you can choose from together with information on each course:

Numeric Keypad Course
This course will help you become a fluent typist with the numeric keypad. All the lessons in this course are available in the free demo version as well!
Refresher Course
If you have done some touch-typing before, this course will revise your existing touch-typing skills by helping you memorize the key locations.
Special Marks
This course teaches you to efficiently use all the special marks on your keyboard.
Typing Training for Typists
TypingMaster Pro also includes the Typing Training for Typists -course which will help experienced touch typists refine their skills by giving various texts for typing and then analyzing the results.

To begin studying a course, just select the course you wish to study from the list. If you wish to set a maximum duration for the lessons, select this from the pull-down list. Now click on "Next" to begin a course.

NOTE:

The courses can be studied in any order you like. You can also select a different course to be studied at any time. When you return to your previous course, TypingMaster will automatically return to the lesson you last studied!

4.2.2 Lessons

Each course consists of lessons which are in turn made up of exercises.

When you begin a course, you will be presented with a screen of the first lesson. In the lesson screen, you will see the title of the lesson and all the exercises of the lesson listed. Information on the status of an exercise is displayed next to each exercise. If an exercise is completed, a check mark will be displayed. A blank circle indicates an exercise that has not been completed.

At the right side of the screen the course name and the number of the current lesson is displayed. This section also contains a "Change course" link which will take you to the Courses screen.

To begin the lesson or continue to the next exercise, click on the "Begin" navigation button. This will begin the exercise highlighted. When the exercise is completed, you will return to the lesson view.

It is also possible to navigate between the exercises. If you wish to study a specific exercise, select this exercise and click on "Begin". To navigate between lessons, select "Next Lesson" or "Previous Lesson" from the list and click on "Begin" to change the lesson.

4.2.3 Exercises

The exercises are made up of three exercise types. These basic exercise types are explained in this section. In addition to these three types, the lessons can also consist of games played with the keys being studied. The Review Wizard is used as well in exercises to train the keys that have shown to be difficult for you.

Keyboard Exercise

The keyboard exercises are designed to teach new keys. The screen in a keyboard exercise is made up of a keyboard with the keys that are currently being studied highlighted. During the exercise, the key to be pressed is colored green.

Underneath the keyboard, two hands are shown. A green dot indicates the finger you should use to press the key in question. This helps you to memorize the locations of the keys and also to use all your fingers effectively when typing.

At the top of the screen, the sequence of keys to be pressed is shown along with instructions on the finger to use when pressing the key.

At the right side of the screen a percentage and a graph indicates the amount you have completed from the section.

After learning the new keys, you will copy words that are made up of these keys. This will help you memorize the new key locations.

Word Exercise

In word exercises, you copy words that are shown in the top half of the screen. This time, you will not have an image of the keyboard in front of you. Instead, you will be copying the original words to the bottom half of the screen.

Your position in the original text is shown by underlining the current word and graying all copied words.

When you copy a word and press space TypingMaster considers the word final and no corrections can be made to it. If you notice an error when typing a word, you can go back and correct it just as long you don't press space. Words with errors in them are marked with blue underlining in your text.

The right side of the screen contains information on the completion of the exercise.

After completing the exercise, TypingMaster will display information on the Duration, Gross Speed, Accuracy and Net Speed of your typing along with written evaluations and a comment.

Your Gross Speed is the actual speed at which you typed. The Net Speed is the Gross Speed minus the errors you made.

Paragraph Exercise

The paragraph exercise is quite similar to the word exercise. In the paragraph exercise you copy a longer passage of text instead of separate words.

The main difference in the paragraph exercise compared with the word exercise is that your position in the text is not shown. You have to keep track of the position yourself. Only when a new screenful of text appears the program displays your position by underlining the current word to be copied.

If you skip over one word in the source text, TypingMaster does not display an error although this is counted as one. This is to help you keep your typing fluent. If you jump over more than one word, TypingMaster displays the word typed as being incorrect and also shows your position in the original text.

4.3 Program Menu

The Menu at the right side of the program screen is used for navigating in the program. By clicking on an item in the menu, you will be taken to the appropriate section of TypingMaster Pro. Below, you will find a list of all the different options in the menu with brief descriptions.

Studying
This item takes you to the studying portion of TypingMaster Pro. If you are already studying a course, TypingMaster will go directly to the lesson you have last studied. If you wish to change a course, just select the "Change course" option below the course and lesson information. The studying section of TypingMaster Pro is discussed in detail here.
Review
This item takes you to the review section of the program, where you can practice the weaknesses that TypingMaster has noticed during your studying. Detailed information on this section can be found here.
Typing Test
Clicking on this item takes you to TypingMaster's typing test. The typing test is described in detail here.
Games

From this menu item, you can access the three games that are provided with TypingMaster. Instructions for these games are available here.

ProTrainer

The ProTrainer portion of TypingMaster can be accessed from this menu item. Detailed information on ProTrainer can be found here.

Statistics
The statistics section of TypingMaster give you detailed information on your studying. This section is described in detail here.
Settings
This menu item will take you to TypingMaster's settings page, where you can set the keyboard layout and other preferences for the program. These options are explained here.
Info

The Info screen gives general information on the program, including program version and build information and information on user licenses. Links to documentation are also included. If you have a technical problem with the program, please include the version and build information in your email. This will help us in determining the cause of the problem.

5. Review

The review section of the program shows you statistics on the keys that are giving you trouble and allows you to fine-tune your skills.

TypingMaster Pro incorporates an intelligent Review Wizard that monitors your typing in the program. Based on the data it collects, the Wizard creates information on your problem areas.

This information can be view in the review section of the program.

The bottom half of the screen shows the keys you are having trouble with and their difficulty index. The keys are arranged from the most difficult to the easiest. The difficulty index is based on the amount of mistyped keys and corrections that you have made in the lessons, games and typing test.

On top of these statistics, an overall index of difficulty is given along with a written assessment on the need of review.

If you have a high difficulty index and the program suggests that you review your problem areas, it's a good idea to follow this advice.

5.1 Review Options

At the top portion of the Review screen, you can select the keys to be reviewed and the method of the review. The keys that are giving you trouble are listed to be reviewed as a default. You can also opt to practice on the keys you have already studied. In the third option, you can select the keys to be studied yourself by writing them on the space provided.

You can select the review method from three options:

Keyboard exercise You can practice the keys you have chosen as a regular keyboard exercise. This is the same type of exercise as when learning new keys. First sequences of the difficult keys and their surrounding keys are typed out, to get your fingers used to the positions of the keys. Then you type words made up of the letters you are practising.
Test exercise In this exercise, you type out test texts made up of the keys that you are practicing.
Game You can practice the keys that you have chosen with the three games in TypingMaster Pro. Select the game you want to play and the game will start drilling you on the selected keys.

6. Typing Test

TypingMaster Pro includes a typing test that you can use to test your current speed, after or during typing courses.

6.1 Typing Test Options

When you select "Typing Test" from the menu, you will get a screen looking pretty much like the image above. The upper half of the screen is devoted to selecting your test text. We have included a number of texts from a variety of authors that you can use to test and practice your skills.

In addition to the test texts already available, you can add your own text files to be used as test texts. To do this, all you need to do is select Add from the top of the screen and when the file browser pops up select a plain text file to be added.

Please make sure that the file you select is in plain text (these files usually have the ending .txt) Text files created in a word processor and saved as documents usually contain information on the layout of the text and cannot be used.

You can also delete tests from the list. Just select the test you wish to delete and click on the Delete button.

Before starting the test you can also specify a duration for the test or specify the duration to be free. When this option is selected the test will continue until the test text is finished or Cancel is selected.

The bottom half of the screen contains information on the tests you have previously taken. You can also choose to view and print out a diploma of a selected test. When you select the option "View/print diploma" a new window will appear with a diploma stating the user's name and test results. This diploma can be printed out by clicking on Print.

6.2 The Test

When you have made your selection press "Next" to begin the test. The test will start when you begin typing.

In the typing test, you will copy the text you have selected. The program will count your speed and errors. During the test you can make corrections to the word you are currently typing but after the space bar is pressed, the word is considered final and no corrections can be made.

If you jump over a word during the test, TypingMaster will automatically jump to the correct position. Although missing a word is considered to be an error, no error is marked to the text you are writing. This will help keep typing fluent. If you jump over more than one word, the program will mark the typed word as incorrect and display the correct position in the original text by underlining the correct word.

After the test, you will receive results on the outcome of the test. The results will be displayed in WPM (Words Per Minute) or CPM (Characters Per Minute) depending on your selections in Settings. The duration of the test will be displayed along with information on Gross speed, Accuracy and Net speed.

Gross speed is the speed at which you typed during the test. The accuracy percentage counts the amount of words that were correct. With an accuracy of 100% all words were typed correctly. Net speed shows your final speed with your accuracy taken into account.

7. Games

TypingMaster Pro has three games that you can use to practice your typing skills. They are also a good way to warm up before taking a typing test. The games are listed below with brief descriptions.

Bubbles

In this game you have to pop the bubbles before they reach the surface. To pop a bubble, press the character that's inside the bubble. Each pop gives you points. If you press the wrong key, points will be taken away.

When you miss six bubbles, the game ends. The faster red and blue bubbles give you more points than the ordinary green ones.

Clouds

In clouds, you will see a blue sky with clouds rolling by. Some of the clouds will turn sunny and a word will appear under them. On the other hand some clouds will turn dark and stormy. You can catch both types of clouds by typing the word under the cloud.

Try not to miss the stormy clouds, since after six missed stormy clouds, the game will end. On the other hand, the sunny clouds will give you lots of bonus points.

You can move between the clouds at any time by pressing enter to go forward and backspace to go back. You can also use space to go forward, but it will not work when a word is incomplete.

Wordtris This game is a variation of the classic Tetris. Instead of trying to fit beams of different types to form rows, you have to type the words in a beam and catch it by pressing space before it gets to the bottom.

When the box fills up of uncaught beams, the game ends. To get the best possible score, look at the word display at the bottom of the screen when you are typing.
Abc

This simple game is a test in typing speed. The goal is to type to letters from 'a' to 'z' as fast as possible. Typing each letter gives you a score the faster you type them the better the score. When you type a letter the bubble it is in will dissapear and you can then type the next letter. The game ends when all the letters have been typed.

As well as the letters 'a' through to 'z' you can select from other combinations including capitals and numbers.

Each of the games can be practiced using the keys that you have already studied. The bubbles game can also be studied with small or capital letters or both, or if that's too easy for you, you can always try numbers 0-9 with both small and capital letters.

Clouds and Wordtris can also be played with a vocabulary of animals, cars or proper names.

8. Statistics

TypingMaster Pro gathers detailed information on your typing all throughout your studies. This information is then gathered into helpful statistics which you can view in the Statistics section of the program.

This chapter will describe the different statistics that TypingMaster creates. We will also give you a few tips on how these can benefit you.

The image above shows the first two pages of statistics side by side. The type of statistics to be viewed can be selected from the pull-down menu next to "Page". The course that the statistics show can be selected from the pull-down menu at the bottom of the screen.

The first page of statistics shows the development of your gross and net speed during the selected course. The vertical axis shows the speed and the horizontal axis shows the lessons you have taken.

The second page of statistics shows the development of your accuracy percentage. It is very important that you aim for a hundred percent, since your overall performance will suffer considerably if you make many mistakes, no matter how good your gross speed is. The second page of statistics also shows the keys you are having difficulty in. These keys can be trained in the Review section of the program.

Naturally, it would be preferable if the general direction of the graphs were upward. However, since new keys are being constantly learned, getting used to them will naturally take a while. If the graphs show a considerable slump in one lesson, it might be a good idea to revisit this lesson and make sure that you master the keys taught in that particular lesson.

The third and final page of statistics gives you an overall summary of all your studying. User information and overall studying information is given at the top of the page. A quick overview on the progress of all courses can be seen in the bottom half of the screen.

It is also possible to view and print out a full report on all of the lessons and typing tests taken. When "View Full Report" is selected, a user report sheet containing detailed information on all lessons and tests will open.

The user report will display the name of the student and general studying information at the beginning of the report.

After this, all courses will be listed with the different lessons shown in detail. The number, type and duration of an exercise is always displayed. Gross speed, accuracy and net speed are displayed in lessons where it is possible to test this. This includes all text exercises.

At the end of the report all typing tests will be displayed with information on the test text, duration, net speed, accuracy and gross speed.

The full report is a very good way to monitor students' success in a classroom environment. It will signal if the student has a problem area and enables directing attention to the ones that need it the most.

9. Settings

The Settings for TypingMaster can be reached by selecting "Settings" from the "Menu". The settings enable you to select your keyboard layout and modify some aspects of the program.

You can change the following options in the settings screen:

Sounds You can select if you wish have sounds in the program and whether to play the opening theme or not. Sounds are not required for the use of the program, but add some functionality.
Speed Unit This option allows you to select the method of counting typing speed. If WPM is selected your speed will be counted in Words per Minute. With CPM selected Characters per Minute will be used for counting.
Font Size You can select if you wish to have normal size fonts or large fonts for exercises. Especially with small displays, large fonts will improve visibility.
Keyboard Layout The bottom half of the settings screen is dedicated to selecting your keyboard layout. TypingMaster Pro will try to configure your keyboard automatically based on your Windows settings. However, it is good to make sure that the correct keyboard has been selected and that all keys match.

Please check that the keys in key diagram match the keys in your keyboard. If the keys do not match, please select another keyboard from the pull-down list on the right.

Lesson Duration You can set the lesson duration for the courses at any time using this option. If you find lessons are taking too long or are too short try setting the value to a new option. You can always use the Default value as a good guide. Lesson Duration can also be set when selecting a course.

NOTE:

Although TypingMaster Pro supports a variety of keyboard layouts, the English version of the program teaches touch-typing only on the common western keys.

The language specific special keys are taught only in the corresponding language versions of the program. For different language versions of TypingMaster, please visit www.TypingMaster.com and select the language of your choice.

10. ProTrainer

This section of the manual will give you a detailed tour of TypingMaster ProTrainer. First, we will give you an introduction to this tool and explain the general concept of it. Next we will explain how to set it up to your own computer and finally we will show how you can make the most out of this program.

10.1 Introduction

A special interactive tool called ProTrainer is incorporated into TypingMaster Pro. The ProTrainer monitors your everyday typing in any windows program (e.g. when you type a letter in Word or an email in Outlook Express). Based on the information the program gathers about your typing, it will create custom exercises that will train your weaknesses. Since TypingMaster ProTrainer creates exercises to train the keys you are currently having trouble with, ProTrainer will be able to help you develop and fine-tune your typing very effectively.

How it works:

  1. Typing Analysis

ProTrainer launches the ProTrainer Satellite to monitor and starts monitoring your typing. The Satellite monitors your typing in any Windows program.

  2. Customized Practice

Based on the information that Satellite has gathered on your typing, ProTrainer creates practice material tailored to your needs.

  3. Quick Results

With these precisely focused exercises, you will get results with just 2 hours of practice.

  4. Continuing improvement

Since the Satellite constantly monitors your typing, ProTrainer can always create fresh material to meet your changing needs.

NOTE:

TypingMaster ProTrainer is language independent!

Since the program monitors only your actions on the keyboard (for example the fluency of your typing, the number of errors and corrections you make), you can write in any language of your choice and the program will help smooth out your problems.

10.2 Setting up ProTrainer

This section will explain how to start monitoring your typing.

First, start TypingMaster Pro. After logging in, please select ProTrainer from the Menu. You will see a short introduction to ProTrainer. When you have read this, please select Next.

Now you will get a screen with options on how to launch the ProTrainer Satellite. The first option lets you decide if you wish to start the Satellite immediately after making your choices or only when the computer is restarted.

The second dialogue allows you to modify the way users are logged into Satellite. It is very important that you select the most appropriate option for this, since it is vital for the Satellite to collect correct information on a user.

If you have Windows set up so that either you are the only person using it or each user has their own profile, the first option is recommended. In these cases the Satellite knows automatically which person is using the computer.

However, if you have many people using the same computer and do not have profiles set up, it is recommended that you select the "Show user list at logon" option. When this is selected, the Satellite will ask the user to select his/her user name from the list each time the computer is started. This will eliminate the possibility of Satellite recording information under a wrong user name.

If you do not want for the Satellite to ask you your user name each time you log on, please select the option "Do not login automatically". This will start the Satellite in "logged off" mode and no typing is analyzed until a user manually logs in.

Security options give you the possibility to use ProTrainer in High Security mode. In this mode the program does not collect any difficult words, it only records keys that are giving you trouble. In addition to this the Satellite monitors only the programs that are specifically selected. This mode is recommended if you are working with programs that require passwords or deal with otherwise sensitive material.

After all the selections have been made, select "Next" to start the Satellite.

NOTE:

Although ProTrainer has a High Security setting, the program itself does not fulfill high security requirements. However, it is possible to obtain high security with the appropriate Windows NT settings.

Even though ProTrainer can be set up in a way that will not compromise security, TypingMaster does not under any circumstances guarantee the security of TypingMaster ProTrainer.

Therefore the program cannot be recommended in environments where security is of utmost importance (e.g. military or development facilities). Please read the information on TypingMaster ProTrainer and security and our Security Statement at our web pages.

10.3 ProTrainer Satellite

The ProTrainer Satellite is a small program that monitors your typing while you are using Windows.

When Satellite has been set up, you will notice it as a yellow key-icon on the task bar at the lower right on your screen. When the Satellite is collecting information, the key lights up. When it is disabled, you will see a cross on top of the key.

When you wish to practice your typing based on the information satellite has gathered, just double click on the Satellite icon and the exercises will begin.

10.4 Satellite Menu

By right-clicking on the yellow key, you can invoke a Satellite menu.

Most of the settings can also be modified from TypingMaster Pro under the ProTrainer heading. However, this menu offers a quicker and easier way to modify and access Satellite and ProTrainer.

The first option from the top displays the application that is currently being monitored. If you do not want this application to be monitored, just click on this option and the application will not be monitored again.

When you select "Show Info on Top", a small Satellite Info window (as seen in the image) will appear. This window will display real time information on your typing speed, typed words and the amount of time you have been typing.

The three options in the middle will take you directly to the different sections of ProTrainer. These can also be reached from TypingMaster Pro under the ProTrainer menu. These sections will be covered in sections 9.5 - 9.7 in detail.

The "Logon..." (In single user mode this section is called Enabled) menu item shows whether anyone is logged on Satellite. If the item is selected, the Satellite is active and gathering information on a user. To log off, click on the menu item. A red cross will appear over the key-icon to indicate that Satellite is deactivated. If "Logon..." is not selected, no one is logged on and the Satellite is passive. In this case selecting "Logon..." will enable you to start getting information on your typing.

When you select the last item in the menu "Close" a dialogue box will pop up asking you whether you want to close the Satellite. This dialogue also contains a check box for launching Satellite automatically at Windows logon. If this box is not selected, Satellite will not automatically start when Windows is started.

10.5 Satellite Settings

The Satellite settings can be reach from the Satellite menu or from TypingMaster Pro by selecting ProTrainer from the menu and clicking on Satellite settings.

You can control every aspect of the Satellite from the Satellite settings. Below the different the different settings tabs are listed along with explanations and tips.

Personal tab

The personal tab displays all personal settings for Satellite. The current user is displayed after the heading.

Application Monitoring This option lets you select between Satellite automatically monitoring all new applications or being able to choose all the applications to be monitored. The first selection is recommended for normal use. If you need to obtain high security and have applications that contain privileged information please select the manual selection of applications.
Recommend Practicing You can choose whether you wish for ProTrainer to recommend practicing after a certain amount of information has been gathered. To enable this, check the check box. You can select the interval of recommending from the slider.
Security Please check this check box if you need high security and do not wish the Satellite to collect your difficult words. When this is selected, Satellite will only gather information on difficult keys. This reduces the risk of delicate information, such as passwords, being saved for practicing.

Applications tab

This tab displays the applications that the Satellite has detected.

The radio buttons at the bottom of your screen let you change between viewing all applications that the Satellite has detected and applications that are currently running.

The top window will then display these applications. If an application is selected for monitoring, a check will appear next to it. Please uncheck all applications containing confidential information. When you select an application from the list, you can see its complete path below the application list.

NOTE:

Settings in the Applications tab can only be modified through the Satellite menu. If the Satellite Settings are altered from TypingMaster Pro this tab cannot be modified.

Common tab

This tab shows all the settings common to the current Windows user profile. If user profiles are not in use, these settings are in use every time Windows is started.

Automatic Launch

When the option "Launch Satellite automatically at Windows logon" is selected the Satellite will automatically start when Windows is started and begin monitoring your typing.

It is recommended that this option be turned on to ensure that Satellite gathers information every time you use Windows. The more information Satellite gathers on your typing, the better exercises you will get!

User Identification

This setting controls the way Satellite identifies who is currently using the computer.

If you have Windows set up so that either you are the only person using it or each user has their own profile, the first option is recommended. In these cases the Satellite knows automatically which person is using the computer. Please select your user name from the pull-down list. Now Satellite will automatically gather information under this name when you log on to Windows.

However, if you have many people using the same computer and do not have profiles set up, it is recommended that you select "Show user list at startup". When this is selected, the Satellite will ask the user to select their user name from the list each time the computer is started. This will eliminate the possibility of Satellite recording information under a wrong user name.

If you do not want for the Satellite to ask you your user name each time you log on, please select the option "Do not login automatically". This will start the Satellite in "logged off" mode and no typing is analyzed until a user manually logs in.

About tab

This tab shows information about Satellite. The heading includes the program version number. If you are experiencing any problems with Satellite, please contact us at www.TypingMaster.com/index.asp?go=support and include this version number in you message. This will help us in determining the possible source of your problem.

Satellite Information This area shows information on the launch method of Satellite and the user that is currently logged in. It is possible to change the current user by clicking on the "Change user.." button.
User Statistics This area shows general usage statistics for the user logged in. For detailed statistics, please select "Statistics..." from the Satellite menu.

10.6 Statistics

This section of ProTrainer can be reached in two ways, either by selecting "Statistics..." from the Satellite menu or by selecting "ProTrainer statistics" in the ProTrainer section of TypingMaster Pro.

The ProTrainer Statistics give you a detailed analysis of the typing you have done in Windows. The statistics are divided into four pages and give information on you difficulty indices and difficult keys and words. Detailed diachronic analyses of your typing are also included that help you map out your development as a typist.

The first page of statistics shows general information on your typing and your difficulty indices. The top portion of the page is dedicated to indices which measure the difficulty you are having in typing keys, capitals and words. From these a general difficulty index is counted.

The indices are based on the information that Satellite gathers on the fluency of your typing, errors being made and words you are having difficulty mastering. If your overall difficulty index is high, it might be a good idea to start the customized practice in order to iron out the problems you are having.

The bottom half of the page contains information on today's typing compared with your average scores. You can use this to check if your fingers are as nimble as usual.

The "Difficult Keys" page shows you information on your difficult keys and capitals. The keys and capitals are ordered according to their difficulty. If you have some problematic keys or capitals, it's a good idea to start the customized practice to get you familiar with these keys.

The next page shows a list of your difficult words. The list is also ordered according to a word's difficulty percentage. This list of words can also be edited by selecting a word or group of words from the list and selecting "Hide Words" to hide your selection or "Edit Word" to edit the last selected word. Words can also be added to this list by selecting "Add Words" and writing the word or words separated by a comma to the box and selecting OK. When a word is added manually, it will get a difficulty percentage of 100.

The last page of statistics displays your problem index, typed words, typing speed, and typing time from the last week. These statistics help you to form an overview of your development as a typist.

10.7 Practice

This section of ProTrainer will help you fine-tune your typing in the problem areas that the Satellite has detected. The practice section can be reached from the ProTrainer menu in TypingMaster Pro or directly from the Satellite menu. You will also reach this section by double clicking on the Satellite icon in your task bar.

The top portion of the screen shows your overall difficulty index and based on this information may recommend practicing.

The three buttons below this indicator let you choose the method to use when practicing. In the first option (which is also the recommended one), ProTrainer will create customized lessons to tackle the specific problems Satellite has noted. You can also select a duration for this customized practice from the pull-down menu next to this choice. If you select "No time limits" the lessons will be gone through without any time limitation.

If you wish, you can also specify the keys or words to be trained manually. Please select "Practice keys" or Practice words" and list the keys or words you wish to practice on the space provided, use spaces to separate words and keys.

Begin practicing by clicking on the "Start practice" button. The different lessons that you will take are displayed on the left and on the right you can compare your current scores with the scores taken before the lessons.

You can fine-tune your typing with ProTrainer continually. Any time you feel the need for some brushing up, just select "Practice..." from the Satellite menu and new material will be created to address your current needs.
