I am having problems with starting a lesson in TypingMaster Online, what should I do?

The problems related to loading a typing lesson in TypingMaster Online are most likely caused by the latest fix of Java 7 released recently by Oracle. Along the fix Oracle decided to change Java's security level from normal to "high". This way users will automatically be shown a prompt and given a chance to decline malicious software before it loads onto their computers.

SOLUTIONS FOR WINDOWS

FIREFOX ON WINDOWS

  1. Activate Java: When loading the TypingMaster Online applet, the users should see a pop up window asking if they want to activate Java and continue. If the pop up doesn't show, there may also be a tiny red warning icon on the browsers address bar, left of the URL address. Clicking on the red warning will show the complete message.
  2. Use Internet Explorer: Try using Internet Explorer, which currently works best with Java.

CHROME ON WINDOWS

INTERNET EXPLORER ON WINDOWS

  1. Check Security Settings: If using Internet Explorer, check that the security settings are not too high. Go to the TypingMaster Online website with Internet Explorer and in the browser go to Tools > Internet Options, then on the Security tab select the Internet zone and make sure the level is set to Medium-high or lower. If you wish, you can also set the security levels more precisely by clicking on the Custom Level button and making sure ActiveX and Java are activated.
  2. Use our ActiveX module: To do this, simply navigate to TypingMaster Online Manager > Settings, and set the Applet type to "ActiveX preferred". After this, open a lesson with Internet Explorer and it will use ActiveX. The Java and ActiveX tutors are identical.

IF THE FIXES ABOVE DON'T WORK
  1. Re-install java: On your computer, navigate to Control Panel > Programs and Features (or Program > Uninstall a program), select Java from the list, right-click on it and select Uninstall. This needs to be done to all instances of Java present in the program list. After uninstalling, go to http://www.java.com, and download the newest version of Java.
  2. Downgrade Java to version 6: The version 6 of Java does not suffer from the security problems as version 7 does. The recent vulnerability concerned only Java 7, and the latest Java 6 (update 39) remains safe to use. You can download Java 6 here:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual_v6.jsp
  3. Inquire about our Flash version: If you are still unable to get the lessons to work, please contact us through our contact form here:
    http://www.typingmaster.com/education/contact/default.asp

The current Preview version already has most of the material in place and it can be used as a substitute if the Java based course is not working. However, there are also some notable limitations - for example, the result saving and course settings are not working just yet. These features should be available around mid March.

SOLUTIONS FOR MAC

  1. Update Java to at least Version 7 Update 13: Some of the last few Java updates have not been completely functional in Mac, and it is possible that the TypingMaster Online tutor does not load due to an outdated Java installation. To fix this, simply update your Java to the latest version (currently Version 7 Update 13).
