TypingMaster Online Webinar: Slides & Summary
October 27, 2012
On Tuesday, November 6th, we at TypingMaster held our 2nd webinar teacher to teacher featuring Mary Merritt of Pace Academy in Atlanta, GA. We had a wonderful turn out of participants with some great discussion and would like to feature the slides as well as some of the highlights of that day for those of you who weren’t able to make it.
Challenges in Teaching
As an educator, you are aware of many of the challenges facing your school and school districts across the country:
- Shrinking budgets
- Limited resources
- Limited qualified instructors
Now, more than ever, touch typing is a skill that students must learn before they get to high school if they are going to be successful. In fact, the ability to touch type has been proven to affect a student’s ability to get projects in on time and achieve better grades. Keyboarding is a core skill and many high stakes tests are making the switch from pencil and paper and becoming computer based.
TypingMaster – an Affordable Solution
TypingMaster is a comprehensive, web-based and affordable touch typing program and around at $2.50 per student per year, many schools can make it a part of their learning curriculum. Pace Academy did just that, where Mary Merritt has been teaching touch typing for over 5 years using the TypingMaster program and was kind enough to share her experience with a number of teachers on Tuesday’s webinar.
Easy to Set-up and Use
Mary works with over 260 students per year in grades 6-8 and each student is required to complete the entire TypingMaster program by the end of 8th grade. The program is easy to set-up. In fact, most of the set-up is done before the first day of school.
Since TypingMaster is a web-based program, each student receives their own account and password and has the ability to access the program from any computer in the school and even from their computer at home.
Through the teacher interface, Mary is able to see how many times a student has tried a particular lesson and monitor their typing speed and accuracy. This allows her to lower the wpm or place them into the Junior typing course for extra practice before moving forward in the program.
Because of the way TypingMaster is set up, it’s easy for teachers with little or no experience in a touch typing course to start students on the program. The entire curriculum is pre-set and can be altered based on the teacher’s and students’ needs.
Achieve Your Teaching Goals
In the 6th grade each student starts out at the same level, even if they have taken a touch typing course before. All students begin at 20wpm and 90% accuracy. As students work through the program, Mary checks the positioning of their hands, posture and monitors their progress, adjusting their individual settings based on their needs.
Typing goals and lessons in Grades 7th and 8th are based on each student’s performance in the 6th grade. Lessons are set at 30 minutes and students type a variety of materials based on the learning curriculum for their grade. Students are also encouraged to use the program outside of the touch typing class, either accessing it from the computer lab during study hall or from home.
As incentive for successfully completing lessons students are awarded with pizza, candy and certificates. By 7th and 8th grade, students are also allowed to listen to music while using the program which Mary has discovered, helps them get into a rhythm and up to speed.
TypingMaster, a Powerful Program
To show how powerful the TypingMaster program is, Mary recounted an experience with a student who initially was struggling with the program. The student started out at 15 wpm in 6th grade and was placed in the Junior typing program. By the time he graduated from Pace Academy in 8th grade, he was typing at 34 wpm with a very high accuracy rate.
TypingMaster is a strong program that can be used by any teacher aiming to increase their students’ typing abilities. Teachers who use TypingMaster in their classrooms are able to help students achieve typing speeds twice as fast as students who don’t use a touch typing program and adequately prepare them for high school and beyond.
