Hi,
I love TypingMaster and just upgraded to version 7. I noticed that the finger positions for the number key (not keypad) are different in Version 7 than earlier versions. I was wondering why the change? Are both supported? Which is preferred and why?
Just wondering.

Hi Bob,
In the older TypingMaster versions, the finger reaches used for the number row were adjusted so that they worked both on standard keyboards and split keyboards. However, we received a lot of feedback from our users preferring the traditional finger reaches over this approach and decided to go back to using them in the later version.
Traditional reaches:
a1 s2 d3 f4 f5 -- j6 j7 k8 l9 ;0
Adjusted reaches (split keyboards; used in TypingMaster 6)
a1 a2 s3 d4 f5 f6 -- j7 j8 k9 l0
On a split computer it is not possible to type 6 with right index (j) as it is placed on the left hand section. Assigning both 1 and 2 to the left little finger was used to take strain off the left index finger which would otherwise need to reach three keys: 4, 5 and 6. Using the right index also for key 8, takes away some strain from the right little finger.
For program technical reasons, we currently cannot support both. If you have already learned the number row with the adjusted reaches, you may want to stick to them. In practice, it really does not matter which finger you use.
I personally use the adjusted reaches even on a standard keyboard as this is how I've trained my fingers to do it.
If you've not yet learned and gained confidence either way, I suggest training with TypingMaster and going with the traditional reaches that it now uses. If you have already learned the "old version way" and would like them to be used in your TypingMaster installation, let us know and we'll send you workaround instructions (you'd need to edit the keyboard layout file in TypingMaster).
