I am experiencing, at multiple sites, random hard-locks of our LTSP terminals when using TypingMaster. I am using the latest available version of TypingMaster 3 as of about a month ago. No other lockups on the terminals have been reported other than while using TypingMaster. One technician reported this:

"It seems to happen when the program is trying open a new window."

Any timely help in troubleshooting this is greatly appreciated.

Hello Lns,

Do you mean that terminal crashes when JAVA APPLET starts to load? In this case it may be related to your brand new Java Plugin version, perhaps you can check if the crash occurs with other java applets as well. Can you find out any Logs about this crash?

Was the same problem occuring with previous Java plugin versions?

Article "Debugging freezing ltsp terminals" at
http://www.opinsys.fi/en-debugging-freezing-ltsp-terminals

It seems the freezing can be very random and it is difficult to get to the problem root. Sharing your experiences with other TypingMaster users would be extremely helpful.

I am currently evaluating a fix not related to TMIntra for this posted issue - It seems as though the Firefox 2.x version of the Java plugin was symbolically linked instead of the one for Firefox 3 - this could have been an issue stemming from "downgrading" to Firefox 2 and then re-installing Firefox 3 last school year. I have changed all of the servers I administrate to the correct plugin for Firefox, we'll see how that affects the lockups.

FYI the commands I use to check the version of Java plugin symlinked is:

-----
jerickson@Fibonacci:~$ sudo update-alternatives --config xulrunner-1.9-javaplugin.so

There are 2 alternatives which provide `xulrunner-1.9-javaplugin.so'.

Selection Alternative
-----------------------------------------------
+ 1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
* 2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so

Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number:
-----

"libjavaplugin_oji.so" is the Java plugin for Firefox 2.
"libnpjp2.so" is the Java plugin for Firefox 3.

This information will probably be valuable to your support team in troubleshooting Linux TM issues.
